Lt Gov William Dooley and Barb Dooley, Richmond Secretary, Attend Kiwanis International Convention - June 22 - 25
Driving to Toronto, Canada with stops: daughter Leah and family near Cleveland, then driving over the Peace Bridge near Buffalo, NY, stopping at Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada (6/20); touring Hamilton and going to the Canadian Military Heritage Air Museum (6/21).
On 6/23, we drove into Toronto and were greeted with signs on overpasses "Childhood Doesn't Come With A Roadmap, Kids Need Kiwanis". We checked into our convention hotel (there were five!) and the convention registration, Kiwanis Store, and the World Showcase of Vendors; We then walked to the CN Tower, past the Hockey Arena, and the edge of Lake Ontario. We took a ferry to Center Island and Amusement Park. We had Cheeseburger Poutine for lunch (a great meal!).
6/23 - Workshops and First General Session with Astronaut Chris Hadfield keynote. Showcase of musicians in Canadian Kiwanis Music Festival. Evening dinner with MOARK Kiwanis attendees at an Irish Pub to learn about the issues and candidates.
6/24 - Business Session (voting on amendments to KI Bylaws and voting for KI Trustees and Vice President candidates). Canada Kiwanis Celebration of 100 Years - donuts and bottled water while listening to more Music Festival winners and having great conversations with people from Belgium, Netherlands, Malaysia and Ethiopia.
That evening we took in a performance of Second City Comedy Club, in the nearby theatre district.
6/25 - Showcase of Ideas in the morning - similar to TED Talks about Kiwanis Signature Club Events. Final General Session and Banquet with "Choir, Choir, Choir!" leading over 1500 in singing, followed by the passing of KI leadership to our new President, Jane M. Erickson of Bellview Nebraska. A special private concert by the singer Jewell concluded the Banquet, but then the stage was Final evening event was the dance with the band "50 Amp Fuse".
The next convention of Kiwanis International will be in Paris, France - June 2017.
We (Barb and Bill) would like to thank the Division 3 Clubs and the Richmond Club for helping make this experience a great one.
